We, Brian and Danny, had the idea for Beam and we developed it into a plan with the help of our wives, Maggie and Anita. But having an idea is way different and more solitary than starting something. You can only really start something with the help of all the people who believe in an idea enough to commit to it their time and effort (and, sometimes, money). So really, Beam was started by all the people who joined us for our first 10-day session in 2005, and it continues to be started by all those people, who join us every summer.
I met Danny on March 7, 1990 on my first day working in the marketing department of Elektra Records. We worked there together for several years selling the work of all kinds of artists from The Bulgarian Women’s Choir (Danny also managed the Choir) to Metallica. Danny left Elektra in the early 90s to found Crossroad Artist Management where he continues to work with Rosanne Cash, The Jazz Passengers and Ben Vaughn. I became Elektra’s Senior Vice President of Marketing, staying with the company until 2004 when I knew it was time to start a camp. My wife Maggie Poxon works in affordable housing development and we have three children, Bess, Dexter and Pearl. Danny’s wife Anita Merk is a Designer and Principal of Flyleaf Creative.
